My Great Grandad and World War II

This is my Great Grandad Alfred Tucker. He was born in Birmingham in 1921.

When the War broke out he was working in a factory that made big machines. So he didn't join the Army until just after the War (1945).

Here are some thing I learned about him by talking to my Grandad (his son)!

  • He was in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and spent most of his time in Egypt and Palestine.
  • He slept in Barracks and sometimes tents.
  • He swam in the Dead Sea and bought a rock back from the pyramids.
  • He got married to my great nanny when he was back on leave from the army.
  • My great nanny's house got bombed in the war she had 13 brothers and sisters but luckily they all survived because they went in the air raid shelter.
  • They didn't have much food because of rationing, you had to eat what you were given.

This is his badge from his Beret.

This is my Great Great Grandad's shop but my Great Grandad did not work here.
