Lectio Divina

What is Lectio Divina?

Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) is a form of praying and meditating on readings from the Bible. There are four stages: Lectio, where we read the text; Meditatio, where we think about particular words or phrases; Oratio, where we say what we think the text means; and Contemplatio, where we write down our thoughts.

Why do we use it?

We use Lectio Divina to gain a better understanding of God's Word, as well as ideas and readings from the Bible. It helps us to try and meditate on what Jesus and the prophets have done and said, and how that relates to our own lives.

What do we do during Lectio Divina?

For Lectio Divina, we create a calm atmosphere by playing classical music, putting the prayer table at the centre of the room, turning off the lights and lighting a candle. We sit quietly and are then ready to go through the four stages.

Do you think that Lectio Divina is a good prayer form?

I think Lectio Divina is a very good way of praying because it helps us to reflect on God's Word, Jesus' actions and our own lives. I also like it because it helps us to relax while reading and reflecting, and this helps meanings to come through. I think Lectio Divina gives us the best conditions to talk to God through prayer.
