My trip to the Tower of London
Not long ago I went to the Tower of London. It is a castle just like the ones we have been learning about in Y5. Here you can observe some things I saw during my visit:
Here is the castle. You can see what used to be a moat in front, slits in the walls and crenels on top of the towers and walls.
The cannons in the Tower of London as shown by the two pictures above. The cannon-bulls were gargantuan. They made me realize how big they needed to be kill an attacking troop. Some cannons were lengthy. Look at the cannon on the right for instance.
Animals
There used to be a zoo here a while back with monkeys, lions, elephants, even alligators! Nevertheless, there are few Ravens here today. One of the Ravens is famous to act dead when not getting enough attention.
Slits
Slits are normally a long
vertical line and a short
horizontal line but are always
small. The purpose of it is
keep the shooters safe. One
cannot shoot inwards from a
long range, but one can shoot
outwards from a short range.
Other
things
There was a display of fascinating medals. Some were
more regular than others. My mum and I had fun watching the
marching soldiers go round the place guarding the Queen's crown jewels in their towering, black, furry hats.
In front of this building is where all the beheadings took place in the castle including two of Henry VIII's wives: Anne Berlin and Catherine Howard.
