JLT visit Parliament

We left school before lunchtime and went with Miss Cooke and Miss Wright to Westminster Tube Station. We then walked to the Houses of Parliament. When we arrived we had our lunch in the sunshine.

Then we had to go through security!!!

If you have ever been to an airport, it is just like that.

We went in through The Education Centre and then we walked

outside and into the actual Houses of Parliament!

We learnt that parliament has 3 main parts.

These are:

1) The House of Commons. (These are made up of MPs. MP stands for ‘Member of Parliament’.)

2) The House of Lords. (These are people who are usually born into their position.)

3) The Queen

We found out about what happens when there are debates in the house of lords and the house of commons. When in agreement

you have to a “Aye”. When in disagreement you have to say

“No”. If the person in the big chair cannot decide, guess what

happens!?A bell is rung throughout the whole of parliament for

just 8 minutes. People have to then gather in the ‘Aye’ corridor

or the ‘No’ corridor to be counted.

Our county is democratic, which means everyone over the age of 18 gets to have a vote. We did a workshop on democracy and had to make up our own political parties. Then we gave speeches and voted for our MPs. Daniel from year 5 was elected Prime Minister. We loved our visit and didn’t realise that members of the public can visit the houses of Parliament. We would love to go back!
