Tower of London

The great Tower of London is next to the old River Thames of London.

It is a great British monument and is in my opinion a fantastic sight.

It is the home of the fabulous Crown jewels and many other historic things.

William the Conqueror started to build the White Tower in 1070s and it became one of Britain’s best buildings. The White Tower is in the centre of the Tower of London and can be seen well across the river. The White Tower is a very important place in the Tower of London because it gave the entire thing its name.

As time went on it became bigger and bigger. This was mainly under the order of monarchs such as Richard l, Henry lll and Edward l.

Through time it changed its use, as it was first a fortress next a palace then a prison and now a museum for the public.

From ll00 to l952 it had the important role as a prison.

The Tudors were very famous at using the Tower of London as a prison. Many prisoners were held at the Tower of London and then beheaded on Tower Hill. At the time of the Tudors, beheading was one of the main ways to kill a prisoner. Some cheered, some jeered and others closed their eyes and didn’t watch as the excitement grew on Tower Hill. The axe was then lifted and SPLAT. Then the head fell over and blood squirted everywhere.

Here are the poppies of the Tower of London. They are doing this to remember the outbreak of World War l which was 100 years ago.

Last summer
when my cousins came over from America, we all went to the Tower of London. My first sight was the Traitors gate where all the prisoners came through by boat. We also got to see the chapel where we saw the grave of Anne Boleyn. Outside the Tower I felt the hard, dirty, stone walls which reminded me of the history of the building. The people who led all the tours were called the Yeomen Warders who are also popularly known as the Beefeaters because the Yeomen of the guards (who are a different group of people) could have as much beef from the King’s table as they wanted.

Overall it was a great experience because this was one of the most historic and oldest landmarks in Britain I have ever seen.
