Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 into a family of slaves. She worked since she was six carrying buckets of water to and from the field where all the other slaves worked to hoe the field, sow the seeds and pick the cotton.

She lived in a small hut while the landowner lived in a big house overlooking all his fields. When she grew up, Harriet worked in the field too.

One day one slave made a run for it and the landowner told Harriet to run after him. But she didn't run, she just stood still. In anger, the landowner threw a rock and it hit her head.

A few weeks later Harriet woke up early, packed some food and took one final look at her family and left the hut.She had to watch out for slave catchers as if she got caught she would be punished. When she finally reached the border of Pennsylvania, where having slaves was illegal, she was free.

After a year, Harriet decided that she would go back and get her family. They all snuck out in the night and also reached the border although it took weeks. Harriet continued to help slaves escape.
