This movie is all about the inside of the head of a 11-year girl whose parents move house from the countryside to a big city, San Francisco on the west coast of America. Riley is finding it difficult to fit into her new school and is homesick. So her emotions are battling inside her head.

Her main emotions are Sadness and Joy but there are also three others: Anger (who lights up when he gets angry), Fear and Disgust who all live in Headquarters. Joy has ruled Riley since she was a baby and she has always been optimistic and happy. However she is finding it difficult to settle into her new school and she hates the pizzas with broccoli on top (but I quite like it).

The trouble begins when Sadness turns a special memory called a core memory into a sad memory. Joy and Sadness battle for Riley's core memory until they get flung the deepest part of her mind which looks like a ginormous tube. Without Joy, Riley doesn't know what to think or do! Meanwhile get lost and have a huge struggle trying to get back to Headquarters. They find a part elephant part dolphin creature called Bing Bong that helps them on their way. Eventually they get back and Sadness takes the lead by taking a huge lightbulb out of Riley's head that was leading her back to the countryside. It all finishes all happy back with Riley's parents.
