Solomon is 11 (or at least he thinks he is) and he is obsessed with running. When his grandfather decides that this is old enough to be accompany him on the long walk to Addis Ababa (capital city of Ethiopia) supposedly to see his nephew, Solomon is excited and proud to be going on such an important trip, especially since he has never been very far from his village. He is even more excited when he learns that the Olympic athletic team is due to arrive in Addis Ababa and he may have the chance to see his heroes. However, Solomon's parents are very concerned about Grandfather's health and whether he is fit enough to make the long journey of twenty-three miles by foot. However, although he doesn't yet know why, Solomon realises that the journey is very important to his Grandfather and he is determined to look after him and make sure they come home safely.

When they finally reach Addis Ababa, Grandfather's nephew is shocked to see them and, oddly, it seems would rather they were not there. Soon, Grandfather reveals the real purpose of his visit: to go to the 'Happiness Pastry' shop to meet the son of a very old friend where Grandfather's astonishing secret is finally revealed. Unfortunately, Grandfather is taken seriously ill and Solomon is given the task of returning home to collect his father to help. This time, he must travel alone and he knows that his Grandfather's illness means he has very little time to complete the journey. When the bus breaks down just outside Addis Ababa, it looks like Solomon's task is impossible, but then he decides to run... Can he complete the most important run of his life so far before it is too late?

This is a short novel with a fast-pace. It makes you want to read on to find out Grandfather's secret and then to see if Solomon succeeds in his journey. The story would probably appeal to Y5 and Y6 readers most. If you would like to read something set in a different country, where the story has some links to real events in the past, and, especially, if you like running, this might be a good book to try. Some of the Ethiopian olympic athletes mentioned in the story are amongst the most famous runners of all time.
